From the editor:
As a longtime Celiac, I know first hand the drama and difficulty of gluten free travel. After a wonderful but toxic trip to the South of France in 2006, I vowed that although I love to travel, I just couldn’t risk getting sick all the time. I thought that I would never travel outside my “comfort zone” again. My companions on that trip were wonderful! They were always trying to help; concerned and pointing out what they perceived to be “safe” and hopefully edible alternatives to the amazing traditional French cuisine that was all around us.
That is actually my point. As a GF eater, or family, you should not have to spend valuable (and oftentimes scarce) time on your well-deserved vacation or honeymoon with the stress and inconvenience of navigating all things gluten free. Frankly, neither should your companions. Gluten Free Travel Magazine is your partner in all things gluten free travel related. We want you to have a safe, comfortable, and blissful vacation, honeymoon, staycation, or business travel experience.
We will provide reviews of out-of-the-way restaurants, independent coffee shops, airlines, resorts, and hotels that understand the needs of the GF traveler. We have a GF product finder, and we will eventually be offering GF cruises, GF spa packages, GF hotels, and more GF travel options for the savvy traveler and the newbie alike!
Initially, we will be an online only resource. Have patience! We will publish hard copy on a quarterly basis soon. Our online magazine will always be free, and never require you to join something. We are all about the social share, and we would love to hear your stories as well. (The “submit your own article for publication” tab is in the footer.)
Although I cannot promise we will publish your work, if we do, you will receive a $25.00 gift card that is appropriate to the country of origin. The Gluten Free Travel Magazine is primarily a labor of love, and concern for all our gluten free friends. We are gluten free too! We have families with dietary issues, type1 diabetes, ADHD & ADD, Autism, UC, MS, and many other reasons to be either gluten free or wheat free. We understand the unique issues regarding travel for anyone on a specialized diet plan, or with a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle. You can trust that our content is about relevant information, and our reviews and articles name current travel centric partners that take your comfort and health seriously. Our goal is to return our dietary challenged friends to travel bliss.
Warmly,
Mary Alice Mary Alice Donahue, Publisher and Editor in Chief May 2010

Golden Egg Cafe in Ventura CA
Owner Ramiro Hernadez loves his restaurant and he loves his customers! The food is really good; homemade and gluten free if you ask. Ramiro waited on our party with enthusiasm and patience. He explained how all of the food was cooked, and was happy to comply with our special order, and gluten free needs.
I had the California artichoke and bacon omelet with rosemary potatoes, and fruit on the side. For those of you who can have gluten, the homemade banana bread is a toast option.
The menu is pretty large considering the size of the place. The restaurant has a wonderful outdoor deck for patio service, as well as a quaint indoor dining room that reminds of the kitchen at grandmas house. On a sweet note, the cafe serves Gluten Free real maple syrup from Vermont, placed right on the table at no extra charge!
Because of outstanding service and great prices for huge portions, as well as really gluten free hand made food to order...we give the Golden Egg Cafe in Ventura CA
grade of a 4 of 5.

Gluten Free Pizza in Santa Barbara California
Amazing! Fresh local sourced produce, a pizza crust to die for, and gluten free beer. Eat in or delivery. Perfect for a delivery to the pool of your favorite Santa Barbara CA hotel. Pizza Guru cares about their clients...vegan and vegetarian fare, as well as traditional pasta and calzones for the non-GF eaters in your group. Menu items are priced to be easy on the wallet. The restaurant itself is perfect for a family pizza dinner, or after event nosh. Organic local wines, bottled soda and water, as well as micro brew and gluten free beer. Subs and pasta dishes are very reasonably priced and pizza runs to the $19 range for a large offering.
The salad selection is robust and includes a terrific caesar salad, and several thoughtful offerings and dressing options. In keeping with their commitment to healthy choices for all food lifestyles, Pizza Guru also has rice milk. Click here for map and full menu. May 2010 Review below.

Review of Pizza Guru May 2010 from an on site visit
by Mary Alice Donahue
Pizza Guru is located on upper Sate Street in Santa Barbara, CA. It is a smaller venue, but the menu is anything but small. I was immediately taken aback by the understanding and knowledge of all things gluten free by the young staff. Quite frankly, I have not had a "real" pizza in over ten years. Oh, I have tried. I have baked, I have ordered, I have struggled to explain...all for naught. Until today.
Enter Pizza Guru. Not only does this pizza take me back to the days of "let's go get a beer and a pizza", it takes me back to real gourmet pizza. Not your average Dominoes, for sure. The pizza is so good that the non-gf foodies in the family will feel right at home.
I watched while my order was prepared on a seperate table, in the front of the house. No contamination. No cross-contamination. Attention to detail, and extreme care...all for my order. I didn't have to whine or otherwise fuss over it; I just got to eat. Like everybody else.
The staff recommended Green's Gluten Free Import beer. I had the Triple Blond Ale. I have to say that this is easily the best beer I have ever tasted, GF or not.

Note the wonderful foamy head, and the beautiful amber color of the brew. This is not your beer pong brew though; at over 8%, it will suggest that you have a driver if you are a light weight like me. Pizza Guru is also a locally sourced organic company that values sustainable farming. The company trains its staff to be sensitive to their customers dietary needs and dining styles, while maintaining a family friendly atmosphere. There is a television with sports on cable, as well as large family sized hand hewn wood farm tables and benches. Delivery is available in the greater Santa Barbara area. Prices are easy on the wallet at $19. for a loaded GF pizza. Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
Why does red wine adversely affect people with allergies?

Napa Valley
Subject: gluten free wine. I really thought that this time I would feel just fine after a glass or two of a high quality Cabernet. My husband and I used to enjoy a cab with dinner and I never got a stuffy nose or a headache after having a couple of glasses, much less a stomach ache. It seems that since I was diagnosed with Celiac's Disease about ten years ago, enjoying a glass of any of the darker reds has been out of the question. Why would that be the case? All wine is gluten free right?
Not so fast there sparky.
In the last ten years it has become commonplace to use flavors and colors as additives in many darker red wines, and some of those additives may not be gluten free. Gluten Free Travel Magazine is investigating this practice and we will report our findings in our June issue. Meanwhile, let's be careful out there ok? Perhaps the safe choice is a nice pink or white wine, as these do not have as high a risk of associated additives. Some of the symptoms of intolerance and allergic reaction to additives include: headache, stomachache, dizziness, runny or stuffy nose, neck pain, rash, and a pronounced "hang-over" even when very little wine has been consumed.

Shopping at the Paseo on State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 2010

Paseo Nuevo Mall
State Street in Santa Barbara is internationally known for Rodeo Drive quality shopping without the crowds. Saks 5th Avenue, Nordstrom, and a variety of small one-of-a-kind boutiques welcome the local as well as the out of town guest equally. After a tough day of taking in the shops and playing I-Spy with the celebrities, cozy up to a gluten free meal of local fresh fish and steamers, or a cattleman's sized steak with all the trimmings at any number of fantastic restaurants right on State. We love the Fish Company for selection and quality, as well as a great wine selection. Go to their website HERE.

Little Mermaid Restaurant in Solvang CA
Terrific wholesome made to order hearty breakfast! The owners understand Gluten Free and Vegan diets and will accommodate any special diet request. our server was the cutest little grandma ever! Danish coffee is wonderful and my cup was never empty or cold. The portions are big, and we suggest you come here with the intention of really getting something to eat! No tiny food here!
The bacon is thick slab, and the potatoes are real with no additives. I had a scramble, my partners had omelets, and one person had what they thought would be a small continental plate with two eggs, two pieces of bacon, and toast. The portions were so big that she took most of her food to go!
They do not have special Gluten Free items though, so do ask your server for assistance when ordering. 2 1/2 stars of 5

Melville Winery, Central California Artisan Wine

Melville Winery Lompoc, CA
Melville is an estate winery with 100% of the grapes grown on their property. The Santa Rita Hills has recently been recognized as its own appellation benefiting from the cooler micro-climate from the greater Santa Ynez region. The extended growing season that the cooler climate allows has been exploited by the Melville vineyard.
According to Wine-maker Greg Brewer, "As winegrowers, our commitment to producing premium wine begins by maintaining the vineyard according to the highest standards of soil and vine nutrition."
Melville has their Estate Line (internationally distributed and the mainstay of the vineyard's production) including Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay, as well as the Small Lot Collection that is unique and released in very small quantities, available at the tasting room. Our $10 tasting included all varieties, and was put toward our purchase price of product for take home.
My tasting partners loved the light pineapple of the small lot collection Chardonnay, as well as the robust and golden apple and slightly oak Estate Line Chardonnay. The small lot Pinot Noir is healthy and bright with a clean tasty finish. Prices are reasonable in the $22-$50 range at the vineyard.
Open 7 days a week 11am to 4pm, private events possible.
